Piccadilly Place Table Lamps

A mixed-use development in the heart of Manchester, Piccadilly Place is a centre of work and play, offering office spaces, residences, restaurants, shops, and more for locals and tourists alike.

Bringing the square to life is the unique Manchester Lamps installation, comprising five giant sculptures in the shape of lamps that represent the history of the city of Manchester.

Each lamp is designed in a different artistic style and pays homage to a local historical innovation. For example, the Art Deco lamp honours Ernest Rutherford, whose research in 1932 at Manchester University led to the splitting of the first atom.

Entuitive was retained by Acrylicize, a collective of award-winning artists, designers, and craftsmen to help bring the five lamps to life as structurally sound, durable pieces.

The installation is a cultural and creative landmark in that historic city.

LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW ENTUITIVE APPROACHES ENGINEERING CHALLENGES, AND DISCOVER WHY ENGINEERING PERFORMANCE MATTERS FOR YOUR PROJECT.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Challenge One

The engineering of a non-building structure. Art installations rely on engineering judgement and first principal applications to provide a design that ensures public safety while also realizing the artist’s vision.

Solution One

Entuitive worked hand-in-hand with Acrylicize to ensure their aesthetic and storytelling ideas were properly communicated through the lamp structures.

Entuitive also worked closely with the fabricator to develop details that simplified fabrication of the complex lamp geometry, allowing for deconstruction for transport followed by quick erection once on site to limit construction time.
