LETHBRIDGE, AB

Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Theatre & Sterndale Bennett Theatre Renewal

The Yates Theatre Renewal revitalized the much beloved dual theatre facility, providing a modern audience experience that is accessible to all.

The Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Theatre, with a 487-seat capacity, received all new seating and complete acoustic treatment.

The project included the replacement of mechanical and electrical services, accessibility upgrades, including the addition of elevators, back-of-house modernization, including stage upgrades, and full cosmetic renovation of public spaces.

The 180-seat Sterndale Bennett black-box theatre also received upgraded flooring and retractable seating.

Entuitive worked closely with Songer Architecture to establish a scheme to add the addition of elevators for accessibility in a cost-effective manner that maintained the architectural integrity of mid-century form that allowed for a very light and open curved façade.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Challenge One

Address the accessibility challenges of the facility, including the need to add elevator access, while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original mid-century building design.

Solution One

In close collaboration with Songer Architecture, a scheme to strategically add two new elevators just outside the existing building footprint was developed. The elevator shafts needed to be very light and open to complement the graceful curve of the main façade of the original building.
