Centre Block Renovation: Temporary Steel Shoring
The Centre Block Renovation in Ottawa is one of the largest, most complex heritage renovations in Canada.
Since opening in 1920, Centre Block has undergone only minor renovations.
The aim of the project is to upgrade the Centre Block building to meet the evolving needs of Canada’s Parliament.
Entuitive is providing Construction Engineering services for the temporary steel shoring required for this project.
The current works will restore the building’s stonework, replace mechanical and fire systems, upgrade meeting spaces, meet modern sustainability standards, ensure the building is more accessible, and more.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Challenge One
Temporary shoring of the Centre Block structure and adjusting/maintaining the shoring for the duration of the construction phases.
Solution One
Develop a sophisticated shoring and jacking system for support of the existing structure, utilizing over 900 piles and 1,400 jacks, to facilitate excavation down to 24 meters of bedrock beneath the building. During this process, the structure will be temporarily supported by a robust shoring system to ensure stability while excavating the bedrock and constructing three underground levels below the current building. Upon completion, the existing building will be supported on seismic isolators, which will be integrated into the newly constructed underground levels.
